We recently shared a drawing on LinkedIn and challenged our community to review the print and see how many drawing errors they could find. In today’s Question Line video, Jason reveals each error and walks through his drawing review process and best practices for ensuring technical accuracy.
The drawing above is for a part that bolts to the front forks of a gravel bike. While deciding how to best tolerance the part is an important discussion, that’s not the focus of this review. Tolerance calculations and choosing the most functional tolerancing scheme require a deeper understanding of how the part assembles and functions. Instead, this video focuses on identifying technical errors. (If you’re interested in the different ways this part can be toleranced, we’ve covered that in a separate video.)Â
As Jason reviews the drawing, he walks through the key things he checks, including:Â
- The title block – Is the referenced ASME standard revision year specified?Â
- Datums and datum reference frames – Are they established and applied correctly?Â
- Each geometric control – Is it legal, supported by the standard, and functional?Â
- Feature definition (SLOF) – Is every feature fully defined for Size, Location, Orientation, and Form?Â
