General Training Course Questions

Questions about our GD&T Training Programs

  • Do I receive a certificate when I complete the course?

We offer a certification of completion, once 100% of the course is completed and you've completed our final exam with a passing score. We will also help with any verification of this certification if a company would like to contact us.

Our team is also happy to endorse you for your new GD&T skill on your LinkedIn Page! Simply connect with us on LinkedIn and send us a message that you've added your certificate and skill to your profile to request this endorsement.

  • What standard do you use for the course?

    For our Online courses:
We predominantly focus on the ASME Y14.5 - 2009. However, we make a note within our course when there are main differences between the ISO standards that could affect the interpretation of the drawing in any way.
We are also in the process of updating our course material, which will include differences between the 2018 and 2009 ASME Y14.5 Standards. Since there are only a few differences between the two years, we have provided a quick overview of the updates to the 2018 standard to all of our students for review.

    For our Live Training Programs:
All Live training is completely customized to your organization's training needs. So, we can cater the training program for ASME Y14.5 or ISO standards.

  • Are there any discounts for groups/students/schools?

Yes! Contact us for group rates today. Information about our Academic Partnership Program for Schools and education programs can be found on: https://www.gdandtbasics.com/contact/academic-training/

  • What course(s) do you recommend for ASME GDTP exam preparation?

We recommend our GD&T Professional Training bundle (GD&T Fundamentals & Advanced Courses) as it also comes with a study guide for the ASME GDTP exams. Please know, we recommend also utilizing the ASME Standard as another guide and study material as you prepare for the exam. Our courses help you learn to use GD&T confidently and accurately in your day-to-day work, whereas the test focuses on how well you memorize the different definitions in the standard. Although our course will provide you with some great material and help to prepare for the exam, the exam itself is very comprehensive and does ask questions directly related to the specific verbiage found in the standard. Our study guide provides you with reference locations for different exam topics that can be found in both our course and in the standard.

We've also created a quick article discussing the ASME GDTP Certification exams, including the differences between the exams available, requirements, pricing, application process, exam content, and study/preparation tips. At the end of the article, we've also included 3 video overviews of the GD&T Certification Exams

  • How do we know what you are going to use?

Our course development team consists of design engineers and CNC machinists who have years of experience in the automotive and fabrication industries.

We discovered that despite the differences in the fields we are in, we all focused on the same few elements of GD&T over and over. While sometimes we came across more complex elements of GD&T in our jobs, 90% of the time we relied on the same core concepts.

Our GD&T Course takes the complexity out of learning Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing and makes sure you get back to work knowing how to use it. Adding this valuable knowledge will help you advance in your career.

About GD&T

Designers, engineers, machinists, inventors and CNC operators all need a grasp of GD&T knowledge to communicate clearly with each other.

  • What is GD&T?

Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) is the overarching language used in design, manufacturing, and quality inspection to communicate on engineering prints. GD&T combines a set of symbols, rules, and principles to ensure that everyone is on the same page regarding how a feature or part is defined. When a design engineer hands off a drawing to a machinist, they need a common technical language for communicating exactly what must be done. GD&T is a system to regulate and determine that communication.

Learn more about GD&T with our "What is GD&T" blog article

  • Why is GD&T Important?

GD&T is very important to the engineering world. It is critical for anyone seeking employment in the mechanical field to understand it. Whether you are an automotive engineer or a CNC machinist, knowing the basics of GD&T is paramount to having success in your industry.

Designers, engineers, machinists, inventors, and CNC operators all need a grasp of GD&T knowledge to communicate clearly with each other.
