In this Question Line video, Jason answers the following question regarding repetitive patterns of features and datums:
I have a question on how to properly use localized datums. I’ve got a part with datum A and B where on 3 faces there is the same set of cutouts. The orientation of the cutouts on each face are different though but the size of the 3 circles are the same.
The drawing, shown above, has a repetitive pattern of cutouts on multiple faces and a datum reference frame ABC. These cutouts consist of two small holes positioned around a large hole. Jason discusses how to control this repetitive pattern of features to a more central datum, identifying the large hole as Datum Feature D and adding “6X INDIVIDUALLY” after the datum feature symbol. He explains that this creates six separate Datum Ds and walks through the effect this has on the position of the holes.
