In this video, Jason explains that the GD&T standards give us a tool to use multiple features on a part to create one singular datum. This methodology is referred to by a number of names, such as “common datums,” “multiple datum features,” and “dual datums.” Jason discusses why this tool is used and walks through two common examples—a part with two cylindrical bearing surfaces that create one axis of rotation, and a part with two seating surfaces that stabilize the part—to show how it is applied and interpreted on engineering drawings.
