In this Question Line video, Jason answers the following questions about considering form in tolerance stack-up calculations:
I’m analyzing the attached drawing and have two quick questions about datum feature A’s flatness tolerance:
- Should I include its flatness in my stack-up calculation for the maximum/minimum gap between the two surfaces?
- If yes, how do I properly calculate its effect?

In this Question Line video, Jason reviews a submitted drawing where two identical parts are placed back-to-back, creating a gap that the contributor wants to perform a tolerance stack-up analysis on. He first examines the tolerance of the individual part, then walks through the analysis of the assembled condition. Jason also explains how the geometry of the parts can affect worst-case scenarios and whether the flatness tolerance of the mating surfaces should be included in the overall stack-up.
