The Square symbol is used to indicate a square feature on a drawing. It is a symbol that many people are not aware of, but it is useful to reduce the number of required dimensions for a feature.


A square feature is indicated on a drawing by including the square symbol in front of the size dimension. In the figure below, the sides of the indicated feature have the exact same dimension: 0.500 +.000/-.005. Therefore, the square symbol is used, preventing the need to dimension both sides.
